Using Air Conditioning in Your Car all Year Round

Air conditioning in your car used to be a luxury. It has no longer remained so and has become an essential part of any car. In winter, your car is already cold enough without you turning on the AC. As a driver, you may think that switching your car’s AC off in the winter may prolong its life and that it would save costs and fuel. However, the opposite is true. It may sound counter intuitive but the benefits of running your car’s air conditioning all year round are many. Let us find out how and why.

Why you should run your car air conditioning system all year round

You should run your car’s AC for ten minutes in every couple of weeks. Even if you do not want your car to be any cooler, the experts advise that you should turn it on every now and then in the winter. Running the AC allows the coolant to move around the system. A coolant removes heat from your cars and contains a lubricant that is useful in keeping the rubber seals and pipe work in good condition.

Not turning on the AC will mean that the coolant does not circulate around and the lubrication will not be able to do its part. It can also lead to faulty seals that cause the degeneration of coolant and result in more frequent car air con re-gas. In some extreme cases, systems are not able to hold gas and would require the seals to be replaced.

Other Reasons

Following are some other reasons why you should use air conditioning in your car during the cold season:

Removing moisture

When you do not use your car’s AC for a long time, it may cause moisture to build up in the vent ducts. This moisture is the main reason that mould and bacteria are formed. So when you run your AC after a few months of inactivity in winter, it does not function as it used to.

Maintaining visibility in winter fog

Your car air conditioner can also be used to dry and dehumidify air in the winter season. It removes moisture in the air and helps keep windows and windscreen clear. This makes driving a whole lot easier.

It is quite natural to wonder how you can turn your AC on in the cruel winter. One good idea would be to turn the heater to warm. This will ensure that you do not feel cold when the AC is turned on while it keeps your system lubricated and properly functioning.

What about the extra cost of fuel?

There is no doubt about the fact that turning your car’s AC will cause extra fuel to be used. However, if you do not run your car AC in winter, it will cause you additional costs when you restart it in summer. The maintenance and repair costs will outweigh costs saved by using less fuel. Therefore, it is quite reasonable to turn your AC on in the winter season.
